Tyres are one of the hardest-working parts of your vehicle. Every time you brake, accelerate, turn, or drive over rough surfaces, your tyres are absorbing heat, friction, weight, and impact. Even the highest-quality tyres don’t last forever — they wear gradually over time and eventually need replacing to keep you safe on the road.
Understanding the life cycle of a tyre — and what speeds up wear — helps you get the best performance and value from every set.
When tyres are first fitted, the rubber is fresh and the tread depth is at its maximum. For the first few hundred kilometres, tyres “settle in” as they mould to your wheels and your driving habits.
Avoid harsh braking or aggressive cornering for the first week or so, especially in wet conditions
As you drive, tread slowly wears away. This is normal and expected. Your tyre is doing its job by sacrificing tread to maintain traction.
This is where good driving and proper maintenance make the biggest difference.
At around half tread depth, many tyres begin to lose some wet-weather performance, braking sharpness, and cornering grip compared to when they were new.
This is a good time to have your tyres checked to make sure they’re wearing evenly.
As the tread approaches the wear bars (minimum legal depth), tyres lose their ability to grip safely, especially in the wet. Water cannot be dispersed properly, increasing the risk of skidding or aquaplaning.
Even if the tyre still “looks okay,” performance can drop sharply at low tread levels.
Safety note: Age matters. A tyre can become unsafe from time and heat even if it hasn’t worn out.
Tyre wear isn’t just about kilometres driven. How and where you drive, how much you carry, and how well tyres are maintained can double — or halve — tyre life.
Your environment and driving style have a major impact.
Conditions that increase wear:
Driving habits that wear tyres faster:
Tyres are designed to carry specific weights. When your vehicle is heavily loaded — or towing — tyres work harder and wear faster.
Wear increases with:
Extra weight increases tyre heat and flexing, which speeds up tread wear and increases the risk of tyre failure.
Tip: If you often carry loads or tow, you may need a tyre built for higher load ratings.
Good maintenance is the easiest way to extend tyre life and improve safety.
Key maintenance factors:
1. Tyre Pressure
Under-inflation causes the tyre shoulders to wear faster and creates excess heat. Over-inflation wears the centre of the tyre and reduces grip.
Result: Incorrect pressure shortens tyre life and compromises safety.
2. Wheel Alignment
If alignment is off, tyres scrub against the road at the wrong angle.
What it causes:
Alignment issues can destroy a tyre long before its time.
3. Wheel Balancing
Unbalanced tyres cause vibration and uneven wear.
Signs of imbalance:
Balancing ensures smooth wear and better comfort.
4. Rotation
Front tyres usually wear faster than rears (especially on front-wheel drives). Regular rotations even this out.
Benefits:
Proper tyre care helps you drive safer, save money, and get the best performance from your vehicle. With regular checks and a few good habits, your tyres will last longer, wear evenly, and keep you confident on the road.
